A2: Waystage in English

English level A2 is the second level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a definition of different language levels compiled by the Council of Europe. In everyday spoken language, this level can be described as "basic" as in "I speak basic English". The formal level description in CEFR as "primary" has the same meaning: it is the foundation itself. At this level, students have mastered the basics of English and can communicate simple and basic needs.

B1: Threshold in English

English level B1 is the third level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a definition of different language levels prepared by the Council of Europe. In everyday speech, this level would be called "intermediate", and that is in fact the official level description in CEFR. At this level, students have passed the basic level but they are still not able to work or study completely in English.

An English level of B1 is sufficient to interact on topics familiar to English speakers. In the workplace, people with an English level of B1 can read simple reports on familiar topics and compose simple emails on topics in their field. However, a B1 level is not enough to work entirely in English.

B2: Vantage in English

English level B2 is the fourth level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a definition of different language levels prepared by the Council of Europe. In everyday spoken language, this level can be called "confident" as in the sentence "I am a confident English speaker". The official level description is "above intermediate". At this level, students can function independently in a variety of academic and professional settings in English, albeit with a limited range of nuances and precision.

A B2 level of English will allow you to function in the workplace in English, and in fact many non-native English speakers in international workplaces are at this level. However, someone working in English at a B2 level will lack the ability to express nuances outside of his or her field. He may also miss some subtle nuances and implications in conversation.

According to the official CEFR guidelines, a person is at an English level of C2.
